FWIW, I don't think anything you wrote yesterday was considered racist. I think it was a result of mis-understood discussions here in the comments section.

I was thinking about it this a.m. while driving and and thought to myself "here is a guy who is willing to haul shit and piss around to ensure his kid has a decent home and others are giving him a hard time because he's upset that some tart is glamorizing irrespsosible behavior" Huh. Go figure. You Rock UB.

Emma - 2005-02-08 09:10:54
I'll get over it Barry! Twice in a row is some sort of record !!
-------------------------------
Amber - 2005-02-08 09:16:12
Now that you've explained a little further, I'd say I have to agree with you. I have a 14 year old son...if he got a girl pregnant, I'd want to slice his weiner off for sure!
-------------------------------
elayne - 2005-02-08 09:37:59
"Because to her ... being a baby mama is a badge of honor. Thank you Fantasia." And... exactly how long has the song been out, again? I agree with a helluva lot more of what you said today than how you phrased it yesterday, but it still makes no sense to kill the messenger. As a DJ, you should know that music *reflects* the society to a far greater degree than it *shapes* society. People write and sing songs in response to what they see in their lives, not the other way around. Truth be told, I sincerely doubt that it was any kind of popular music that inspired this girl to go out and get pregnant. You yourself implied that her upbringing had a lot to do with it, so why aren't you saying "thank you" to her mom and grandparents?
-------------------------------
DS - 2005-02-08 09:45:18
Concerning this "controversial issue" I think it's awesome of you, UB, to just spell your opinion out rather than be evasive about it (much).
-------------------------------
Squeakster - 2005-02-08 10:19:16
I fully expected UB to let bygones to be bygones and simply move forward to the next topic. Kudos for clarification. I think yesterdays topic touched a lot of people a lot of different ways. Misunderstandings or not, it was good to read real opinions from real people (some pretty good mud slinging too!). Plus, this way I win my bet on a technicality!
-------------------------------
Squeakster - 2005-02-08 10:21:49
I forgot, note to UB: Chill on the adult PPV to keep your cable bill down. (heh!)

anenigma - 2005-02-08 10:35:13
Damn, I always miss everything when I skip a day! There was nothing racist about that post. In my son's JR/SR High alone there are 5 girls having their babies. White, suburban, listening to too much rap music girls who also think they need a child to complete their lives. Very scary.

Laura - 2005-02-08 10:35:45
The only thing that saved that military mixer from being a 2 hour trip through hell was the brilliance of the song "Word Up". Other than that, it sounds completely demoralizing for everyone involved.

HRT - 2005-02-08 10:41:48
Why does this suddenly feel like deja' vu, all over again???
-------------------------------
Andy - 2005-02-08 10:51:48
There you go again HRT, stiring everything up.
-------------------------------
HRT - 2005-02-08 11:10:36
Actually all I meant was that UB posted the same entry twice. What did you think I meant?
-------------------------------
HRT - 2005-02-08 11:14:21
Not to be redundant, but just for you Anderific. I wrote this in the comments section the FIRST time UB posted this current post.

HRT - 2005-02-08 09:27:41 I am man enough to admit when I'm wrong. My intial instincts about you actually were correct (instincts prior to yesterday's post). You're a stand-up kind of guy UB. Some of what I inferred yesterday was blatantly incorrect, my bad shorty.

I know how you live for my approval.
-------------------------------
Andy - 2005-02-08 11:20:14
I was just busting you HRT. I know you are a stand up guy.

Cold but calm Canuck - 2005-02-08 11:54:51
Yesterday, HRT said, "You don't know anything about me." Sure I do. You're posting it on the Internet. What is it with you 'Murricans? Don't you have any colours in your country other than Black and White? Yours is a country of extremes, eh? No grey areas. Right or wrong, Democrat or Republican, North or South, war or peace, Bush or Carrot-top. You folks all need to import some calm 'cause some many of y'all seem really pissed off most of the time. According to the RCMP, some people up here grow great pot (not that I'd know). I figure that's why your kids are dying in Iraq and ours aren't. Come visit this summer and try to unjam the pickle from your collective ass. Hmm. Maybe I am bigoted.

Joshua Billingsworth - 2005-02-08 11:59:02
all teen mothers are sluts, plain and simple.
-------------------------------
Kelly who was first commenter on the first entry - 2005-02-08 12:02:18
Why did UB post the same entry twice? Joshua, there are plenty of mothers in their twenties who are sluts, as well. And thirties. Age doesn't make you a slut. Opening your legs for or sticking your pickle in anything that moves is what makes you a slut.
-------------------------------
Karen - 2005-02-08 12:07:20
Sounds like the 14 year old's mother didn't want to take responsibility for being a mother and set a fine example that someone else will provide, don't worry about it! She's the one who taught her daughter that you can have a kid and party too. Put the blame where it belongs. It's not music, tv, or movies faults, it's that people are raising dumb ass kids!
-------------------------------
Justagirl - 2005-02-08 12:49:58
happy happy joy joy... YAY UB, you have the biggest gonads in the world to touch that subject again, you are more of a hero now! HRT should quit whingeing... Canuck you make me laugh out loud, but maybe that's cuz I'm a Canadian also and have similar sentiments... And I'm 27 I couldn't imagine being a grandma in 2-3 years, that's messed up.

Squeakster - 2005-02-08 14:05:11
When I smoked pot formerly, I noticed I would have memory impairment. At the time I considered it a harmless temporary side effect. Now, I'm not so sure.
-------------------------------
elayne - 2005-02-08 14:49:06
by the way, my final thoughts on this - this post, and several of the comments, indicate that you're referring specifically to teenage girls who are unable to provide for themselves, much less an infant.. but at the end of yesterday's post, you referred to your neighbor, Gretchen, whose marriage is apparently headed for divorce, as a "baby mama" - lumping the rest of us single moms into the same category that you were grousing about to start with. It's taken me a full day to suss it out, but that's the part that hit me (and maybe some others) where I live - that Gretchen, whose marriage fell apart, is being tarred with the same brush as the "drains on society."
-------------------------------
HRT - 2005-02-08 14:55:28
"whingeing"? Did you mean whinging or whining cause if you're going to use big words please try to spell them correctly.

Ahhh Canada... you mean we haven't invaded y'all yet? Damn I knew we were forgetting something.
-------------------------------
Goldy - 2005-02-08 15:02:20
You are right Uncle Bob. Fantasia is a fucking joke. You are completely right with everything you said and I agree with you completely.
-------------------------------
Cold but calm Canuck - 2005-02-08 15:18:39
HRT, you're funny. You said, " . . . if you're going to use big words please try to spell them correctly." Mr. Webster says: Main Entry: whinge Pronunciation: 'hwinj, 'winj Function: intransitive verb Inflected Form(s): whinged; whinging or whingeing Etymology: from (assumed) Middle English, from Old English hwinsian; akin to Old High German winsOn to moan British : to complain fretfully : WHINE Oh, btw, you should check your history. Y'all DID invade us and we kicked your asses out and then we strolled down to DC and burned down the Capitol and the White House on Aug. 24, 1814. Ah, but they don't teach that in your once-proud schools, eh?
-------------------------------
HRT - 2005-02-08 15:21:42
We don't recognize alternative spellings down here.

And didn't you know that the MAN invented revisionist history just for that very reason? And if you Canadians were so superior when you alledgedly beat us Americans, then why is it that we got the good climate part of the continent?
-------------------------------
HRT - 2005-02-08 15:22:54
Honestly, I'm really beginning to think we could do without Canada. But I do have pity on you. I know you Canadians must have lost your GOTdamn minds since there was no NHL this year.
-------------------------------
cayley - 2005-02-08 15:25:48
Hey - just my two cents. I don't think that teen mothers should be glorified, nor should they forgo responsibility in their lives, but often how they have developed is a product of the society in which we live or their particular position. I grew up in a town that had one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in Canada. There was a special school/daycare for teen mothers attached to my high school, and my mom, as a daycare worker, worked there for a bit. Maybe our welfare system is different than yours, but a lot of young mothers don't have it easy just from collecting welfare. I'm not saying it's a life goal, or that they should be praised for having kids, but neither should we bash the ones who just have a rough life. It's not the same thing as "just saying no", that's black-and-white-ing the situation way too much.
-------------------------------
HRT - 2005-02-08 15:44:32
It's nice to know that not all Canadians are like "Cold". Well thought out and well put cayley!!!

You know what sucks..is that I was a teen mom...(17)....I married the guy...who was (22)...and we've now been married 10 years...not once did I get anything for free..WE worked hard to get things right for ourselves and our kids...yes kids..we went and had another child.......and we're happy...we just Celebrated 10 years.....but now..that the military is calling up he is gone...and now I'm a single mom....after 10 years...I'm left alone to raise these two kids.....and I'm amazed...at how women do it .....Not the teen girls...but real women...who...work a job...live in a home...and bust their asses to make their kids lives normal....UB....You're right...You're sooo right!.....Single Women who do it on their own..deserve soo much credit!!

April Ann - 2005-02-08 16:13:35
I'm with you, UB. It's bad enough I hear these little girls talking about wanting to be a BABY MAMA, and they really have no clue what they'd be getting themselves into. We know... that's why we would prefer that someone who has their ear isn't talking about it like a badge of honor. Yeah, being a mom is a tough job, but hell, if your #1 goal in life is to get knocked up, you sold yourself short before you had a chance to fail. That, and a lot of the girls I know who had babies way too young tend to not feel the need to take care of the baby, unless baby is being "aww, cute".

Ally - 2005-02-08 16:14:27
A big HUGE AMEN to ALL your comments on Fantasia and her craptastic song! I for one have always hated her, from the first moment she appeared on American Idol, and this only solidifies my distaste. I say kudos to you for sharing your opinions and insights, I couldn't agree more with you!
-------------------------------
shana - 2005-02-08 16:37:46
i'm really liberal (and a single mom), but i must admit that i agree with the unkster here. single motherhood is hard, as one is "on call" 24/7/365. it closes a lot of doors, but if the mother resists sterotypical behavior patterns and exercises restraint and discipline, she may be able to salvage both lives and make a 360 degree turn. but it's a given that she is starting off behind the 8-ball. i think that perhaps fantasia was trying to empower young women and support their efforts, but i agree that it was a misguided effort. she could have done the same in a different song, with lyrics about working 2 and 3 jobs while trying to rear her child(ren), mentioned staying in school, de-glamorized a typically squalid lifestyle of deprivation and making-do. we certainly don't need to hand out rose-colored glasses to these women. it's a hard life they have chosen, and we shouldn't encourage the irresponsibility further.

Cold but calm Canuck - 2005-02-08 16:47:08
Said HRT: "We don't recognize alternative spellings down here." Yepper, there's a lot of things you don't recognise down there. Revisionist history? We have pre-Photoshop pictures. Hey, no NHL? Fine, I never watched hockey (or TV, for that matter) anyway. I'll bait people on the Internet for amusement. Thanks to Ally for the word "craptastic." I'll be using that puppy. BTW, I married a single mom.
-------------------------------
HRT - 2005-02-08 16:52:18
I'm sorry what?!? Isn't it blaspheme to be a Canadian and not watch hockey? That's like being tall, black and from Detroit and NOT being into basketball!

Goofing on stereotypes is my favorite pasttime.
-------------------------------
Terra - 2005-02-08 16:58:03
HRT, has it occured to you yet that all you're trying to do is be an instigator? You're jumping all over ever-freaking-body for their OWN OPINIONS, but then when somebody says a damn thing about yours, you go bonkers? Bonkers? No. You try to change the subject attacking Canadians and saying we should kick their asses. I am American, but dude. Back in the day, they kicked our asses. Check your sources before you make comments. Especially when they're uncalled for. Oh, and UB, you've kicked the wasp nest again. Good job. Man, Fantasia is ugly!

Lyrics for Shana - 2005-02-08 17:14:56
Shana said: "she could have done the same in a different song, with lyrics about working 2 and 3 jobs while trying to rear her child(ren), mentioned staying in school, de-glamorized a typically squalid lifestyle"

Lyrics say: "I see ya payin' ya bills I see ya workin' ya job I see ya goin' to school And girl I know it's hard And even though ya fed up With makin' beds up Girl, keep ya head up"

Maybe figure out what the song SAYS before calling it a "misguided effort."

Justagirl - 2005-02-08 17:48:47
Canuk... nice to know you've got my back. HRT, if there was a spelling mistake I'm truly sorry, however I do believe that I got my point across and that's all that matters. AND as for having the better half of the continent, DUDE! we so scored on that one... Which would I prefer... scorching hot all the time, drying the heck outta everything causing raging wildfires, hurricanes out your hiney every season, or winter, which comes with 3 other very different and beautiful seasons. I choose diversity my friend. Which is somthing you should check out. DIVERISTY, it means that there is more than one option, much like opinions, people have more than one. (go figure) And for hockey, we had it, the Juniors kicked some ass this year and brought home the gold, every province has it's own hockey leauge, which is true hockey the way it was meant to be, fun and not so money grubbey-ey. So that's my 2cents.... I am sure that there will be spelling mistakes... over look them, much like we've overlooked your ignorance.

Squeakster - 2005-02-08 20:31:31
It is difficult to convey sarcasm in writing. That's why smileys were invented. Folks in Canada, you know we love you! Our twisted sense of humor might sometimes be hard to pickup. But we mean well, trust me. And with that, (since I have long since won my $40 bet) may I move for the "baby mama"/"commentor bashing" discussion to be over? Anyone care to second? Anyone?
-------------------------------
Katherine - 2005-02-08 23:54:50
I thought your first entry on baby mama was brilliant (and amusing). Anyone who defends, supports, and encourages teenage pregnancy is a moron and should be eliminated from the gene pool.
-------------------------------
Kate - 2005-02-08 23:55:35
I agree with you on "Baby Mama". My opinion is that it is a trashy, trashy song.

Katherine - 2005-02-08 23:57:56
Bob, by the way, with your bazillion readers, you could make money from this site you know. Have you seen Dooce.com? I think her site earns her $1000+ a month.

in my opinion, if you dont know shit about sex and reproduction, dont do it. my friend couldnt understand why she got pregnant even though she wasnt using anything. the best part of it was when the dead beat dad told her it was 95% her fault. well maybe its just stupid people shouldnt breed.

I hate that people toss the word "slut" around like this. It's ignorant and judgemental.
