Congrats on your wife getting the new job UB!! With her working less hours maybe now UB will be getting some. Go Uncle Bob!

Third, and I agree. No reason to be that rude to the guy. A simple "no" would have sufficed.

Uncle Bob, give your wife MAJOR perks for getting that job, I am so happy for her! How ironic... today is my last day working for a company that is very much like her current one, and I can feel her relief like it was my own. Major congrats to her... I hope she's super-proud of herself!

Congratulations, Aunt Bob.
As for the homeless guy, well damn, doesn't your company have dogs for shit like this?

I couldnt be mean either. Our city has them on every freeway entrance begging for money, until the light changes. My boss told me when he worked for a car wash he offered 4 of them jobs, and would pay them under the table, he said they refused and said they made more pan handling.
I still feel guilty and that red light takes forever to change!

I work in a downtown area and I can tell you that the "$12.00 Shelter" story has been popular for 4-5 years now. (FYI - generally, shelters don't charge) Also look out for the "All I Need is Bus Fare" ruse. It comes complete with a dollar amount handwritten on the back of a Greyhound luggage ticket. The destination is always 50-75 miles away to make you think that your couple of dollars will actually make a difference because, you know, they're ALMOST THERE! No matter what variation is used, it almost always starts with, "I'm not asking for money", which in fact is Bumspeak for "I am indeed asking for money". In the past we've offered them jobs cleaning our parking lot. Not. One. Taker. Ever.

Squeakzilla - 2005-04-19 11:24:06
The Squeaktress and I were once running a business in Denver. We offered the homeless guys odd jobs (on the exterior AND after business hours) for food. These guys were so diligent, trustworthy
and dependable that we started giving them money too. That's when the fit hit the sand. It almost turned into an extortion type thing. They would hang around in clusters during business hours and harrass our clientele. So my policy now is I'll give a meal but never any cash, coin or other currency. And BTW, Yay Susie!!!
-------------------------------
lisal - 2005-04-19 11:34:37
Yeah, we've had homeless people breaking into our office building at night and sleeping here for the last week or so. They leave their shit all over the place, literally, and it's getting to the point where people are scared to come in in the morning. Tomorrow I bring a baseball bat and we'll see if that scares them off for good.
-------------------------------
lisal - 2005-04-19 11:35:19
BTW...yay for UB's wife.

Jill - 2005-04-19 13:33:50
I agree with Squeakzilla on the not giving panhandlers any currency. I once drove past "intersection panhandlers" (you know, the ones with signs that stand at the busiest intersections and sneak up to your windows and take you by surprise), stopped at the Burger King drivethru, and ordered the KID a Whopper Meal with a Coke. Went back, gave it to him ("I hope you like Whoppers!"), and what did he do?
He put the damn bag down on the sidewalk and continued to panhandle.
If this guy was truly that "starving" he would have stopped and eaten hungrily.
Although I have one theory that he may have had a family to feed it to.
-------------------------------
Jill - 2005-04-19 13:36:32
I was about to say "gee, I'd feel bad if some truly homeless people read this" but the blonde moment passed and I realized that those in need likely don't have access to the web.
-------------------------------
Tricia - 2005-04-19 14:12:32
Jill: I did that once, with literally my last few dollars (I was a student with a meal card), and dropped off the McDonald's bag with a man, who looked in the bag, looked me in the eye and said, "What am I supposed to do with this, the sign says 'money'". The sign also said "hungry."
-------------------------------
al - 2005-04-19 16:34:41
I had one guy ask me for money, and being the smartass that I am, I asked him what he would do with the money....he said buy himself a meal. I said, pal you're in luck I can save you a trip. I handed him the doggie bag I had been carrying around NYC for a couple hours.....it was half of a real New York Deli sandwich, about 1/2 of meat on it....he looked at me like I handed him a turd.
I only give guys money if they play a musical instrument or do some magic....maybe if their story is funny.

MrsSquidley - 2005-04-19 18:27:26
This is what makes you different from the drunk ass boss. Inside you could have said no, but you would have been polite about it.
-------------------------------
fifi - 2005-04-19 18:38:03
What separates you from a homeless person might be just dumb luck. Jamie doesn't see it like that, hopefully he will never become homeless. Three kids and a wee drink problem don't go together well.
-------------------------------
fifi - 2005-04-19 18:39:56
Well done to Susie. Hope the taste of success is better than the tast of suckin' seed, UB!

Jessica - 2005-04-19 19:30:58
Well, UB, to save you from having to say no to hobos, maybe you should just buy this shirt:

Raven - 2005-04-19 23:28:06
congratulations Susie .. and you too UB ... for being able to have a normal life together (well .. relatively speaking, yanno?)
and i agree ... that was a little rude for drunk ass ... a person can use some tact and compassion to get a point across. people don't always have to be assholes.

Bucket - 2005-04-20 04:31:26
Congrats to your wife for the cutback in hours! And congrats to you for finally experiencing dicktaste in your mouth- it is gross isn't it? HA! Then again, I gave that up years ago too when I realized the dyke within, so I no longer have to have one of those nauseating things in my mouth. As for the 'hobo', James is an ass, as are all of the other ignorant assumptive cold-hearted asses who feel his approach was justified. He needs to experience first hand what being homeless is like. I've been on the streets myself, and I've had not a dime left in my pocket. It's hard as hell to go and even ask someone for help like that guy did, knowing right away they most likely are going to spit on you, but you have to ask anyway. Someday he will get a taste of his own coldheartedness....life has a way of turning the tables.
-------------------------------
westburian - 2005-04-22 20:19:06
Yes, life does indeed have a way of turning the tables. Years ago, when my truck broke down, I really had no way of getting any decent work, I did construction, a/c and heating, that kind of stuff, and had always taken care of myself - but now my parents were deceased, I had no one to turn to for help. When your car-less and 30 something you can't even get a menial job because you are often 'overqualified'. I tried Burger King, McDonalds, grocery stores, they all want young kids. That year I found myself in tears on Christmas Eve standing in front of an Eckerds without so much as a dime for a xmas card for my girlfriend and my electricity and phone cut off. Eventually, I found work and got back on my feet, but it was tough. A few friends helped me out with some food and a neighbor let me run an extension cord to his house for electricity. My water was cut off and I filled milk jugs from his garden hose for drinking water and 5 gallon buckets for bathing and to flush the toilets. I got a newspaper and got a job telemarketing, not exactly what I was after, but I did it and bounced back. Moral of the story - most people are only a few paychecks from homelessness, and while some homeless people are truly 'bums' and may even be 'scum', (there is plenty of scum wearing three piece suits too!!!) many of them have drug and alcohol problems, may not have decent job skills, and don't know where to get help. They are forced to survive the only way they know how on the street, and that may include playing games and lying, and after a while it's all they know. Yes, it's bad for business to have homeless people hanging out in front, but you'd think that the richest nation on earth would be able to deal with a such a societal problem. A little compassion is in order, because it could just as easily be you or me standing out there with a sign someday. I'm grateful for everything I have, when I BBQ, I cook a lot usually, and make several plates, and stop under the freeway bridge and share. I have found a real mixed bag of people amongst the homeless, some have mental problems, MANY are vietnam vets, there are druggies and alcoholics. But they are all real people with real feelings, and it could be argued whether or not some actually appreciate, or want the help, but it's not something we can, or should, ignore, and, bad for business or not, should not be treated like stray dogs, life is short, and we ARE all God's children when it comes right down to it.----That being said, I remember something I read in the book looking out for no. 1 years ago that has stuck with me - "One of the best ways to help the poor is by not becoming one of them"
