SECOND! Diets are evil. I'm currently failing one myself. I mean... seriously, i learn everyday what foods NOT to eat. My dream of actually having a list of "Foods i love to eat and should eat" is diminishing.

Uncle Bob ! I own a Neon, and I did research before I bought. Make SURE you get a newer one. The older ones are nothing like the rental car you our driving, and they are known to blow headgaskets left and right. Good Luck

Buying a Neon will give you the opportunity to tell the in-laws next year (next family reunion) that you don't have the space in the car to bring along the Karaoke machine.

I have a '98 Neon (my "fun car") -- I absolutely love it, BUT I would never want to try and use it for a family car. Of course, mine's a 2-door and a 4-door might be okay. But... it's a very stiff ride, lots of wind noise, and extremely uncomfortable over any distance (longer than 30 minutes or so). I also have an '05 Honda Element. (Yes, the box-on-wheels.) I couldn't be happier with that purchase -- it's small and handles like a car, yet you can pack an AMAZING amount of stuff in the back and the head/leg room is unlike anything I've ever driven before. (I'm only 5'3" but my 6' mother was highly impressed by it LOL.)

3 cars sounds like you will have to pay lots of insurance to put them on the road "just incase" one breaks down....
-------------------------------
IV:XX - 2005-08-10 09:00:41
...if you're going to have 3 Dodges in the driveway, then you should go ahead and plan on what to do when they are ALL. THREE. BROKEN. DOWN. Seriously, pay a little extra and get yourself a Toyota. Over time you will find that it is God's gift to the mechanically challenged.
-------------------------------
Andy - 2005-08-10 09:06:59
Huh, 3 used cars. All registered? All sales tax paid, all insured, will be cheaper than 2 and more reliable? Also what about when all 3 of you are going on vacation, to grandmas our just "out"?

Rav 4. 4 cyc. AWD, Toyota Quality, and a fuckload of storage.

-------------------------------
Andy - 2005-08-10 09:08:11
excise tax too.

Oh...my....God. A Dodge Neon? The only thing worse than one is TWO.
-------------------------------
Sandra - 2005-08-10 09:40:35
Sorry, but I have to jump on the "3 CARS??!" bandwagon. That's a lot of insurance money every month no matter what kind of multi-car deal you can swing.
-------------------------------
The Boy - 2005-08-10 09:47:46
3 cars... only if two are at least paid for free and clear. Dodge Neon ought to come with pallbearers--- good luck the next time you get hit. Go with Element or Scion... rolling boxes that will hold lots of stuff. there's a reason those Dodge cars are so inexpensive....Plus did anyone else think "something else" when Amanda mentioned her "stiff ride"....sorry, it's UB and there hasn't been any mention of Korea's finest yet.

Debby - 2005-08-10 09:48:30
Hey, three cars is doable. Insurance is crippling in South Florida, but we managed 3 cars for several years. IT.CAN.BE.DONE. =)

I weigh in (pun intended) to document my personal addiction to peanutbutter filled pretzels. I will eat these things until the salt creates abrasions on the inside of my mouth and guess what? I still do not have the willpower to stop. Talk about snacks from hell!

stella - 2005-08-10 10:20:32
Please, whatever you do, do not by the Neon. It may have been nice for the time you rented it, but when you really start driving it around and lugging the boy everywhere in it, it will quickly lose it's appeal. Stick to something European - or non-American for that matter. I'm personally a fan of the Toyotas and the VWs.

Steph - 2005-08-10 10:28:26
We had a Neon when I was growing up - the thing was cute (hi!), but a total lemon. Try a Honda CR-V. It's about the same price as a car, but lots o' room. My mom has one and loves it. I even like driving it, and I despise driving SUVs.
-------------------------------
Steph - 2005-08-10 10:30:31
Oh, and I sound like I'm about 16 - I'm 26, and actually looking for a car right now. :-) Also check out Hyundais. I know, POS - not anymore. I'm doing a 24-hour test drive of the new Sonata, and it is a thing of beauty. And quite affordable. Yay!

I don't know enough about cars to suggest a good one, but I wouldn't go with a Neon. I had a friend who got in a little fender bender in one and it crushed like a pop can. My Toyota Corolla may be a piece of crap, but I could have got in the same wreck he did and walked away with a dent. Oh yeah...and don't buy a Toyota Corolla. They're pieces of CRAP!!!

I sold Dodge cars. For what it's worth, Neons are okay. If you're single and 20. If you're just in love with Dodges, at least look at a Stratus. It's a little more heavy than a Neon with some more room.

I just traded in my car & got a Mazda3. It is absolutly wonderful!! It's sporty, looks nice, & is very afforable. Mazda is the way to go, screw Dodge!

My mom has a 95 Neon, and she loves it. It's evidently very easy to steal though because of the way they do make the window s, as my mom discovered when her car was stolen in May.

I've done the "more cars than people" thing before, and lemme tell you... insurance and registration and oil changes and and and... it just about ate me alive.

Blue Meany - 2005-08-10 12:52:12
My Honda Accord (Bruce) is a great small car with lots o' backseat room -- plus was 6 years old when I bought him, and kept up the reliability till right before I deployed, 2 years and 45,000 miles later. Those Japanese, they know what the fuck is up.
-------------------------------
Andy - 2005-08-10 13:09:42
I drove a 95 Dodge Neon about 9 years ago. It was embarrassing. You think people call you a "fucking queer assed retarded shit sucker homo" now, just wait till you get a neon.
-------------------------------
anonny - 2005-08-10 13:28:20
Dude, the Dodge Neon's crumple like a soda can in accidents. They are also lemons and... wow... you are not a genius. I'm sorry... I could have maybe given you "super smart" with some other Dodge vehicle, like a truck... but not TWO NEONS! Go with a Toyota. Those babies last over 200k miles. If you are thinking Neon size, look at the Corollas. And you better check with your insurance co. b/f you just go on out and buy two new cars... the costs, oy!

huh - 2005-08-10 13:40:25
I'm still trying to figure out the "3 pieces of shit are better than 2" plan.

Good grief guys, he said two compacts, not two neons. No one is that stupid. I still think you are a genius UB.

I've heard that line "come on, eat me!" works in other situations too.

Three craptacular cars are more expensive than two. By the cheapest used Japanese car you can that works for you and run it into the ground. Then rinse, lather and repeat.
-------------------------------
Stacey - 2005-08-10 14:47:41
2 neon stories. one front tire came off (which the dealer put on) and ended up crashed and was gone. two while on a drivers exam the interior of the car began to get a little smoky. turns out something in the front was on fire... bad neon BAD!

J - 2005-08-10 18:23:18
Toyota is definitely kickass, very reliable, as are Hondas.

3 cars does make more sense than 2, especially in a 2-job family with a history of breakdowns. my husband is a mechanic and it still makes sense for us. we aren't rich, but our insurance is affordable on all 3, and it has saved my ass more than once. of course, we have a van a car and a truck, so we're good for any situation, but to the person who felt you couldn't put a child in a compact car, when i was 10, with 1 sister 12 and another still carseat-bound, my mom and my grandmother and us girls all managed to get around in a 2 door datsun stick shift. it can be done.

U-B... I have come back to read after a long absence and I realized that you changed your banner. LOVE IT... and thanks for the heads up on the Chex fiasco... I hate it when things don't live up to their expectations.

Amanda - 2005-08-11 10:59:49
I agree with tali -- Neons are VERY easy to break into. My boyfriend used to work at a Dodge dealership & whenever someone would accidentally lock the keys in one, he'd be called to unlock it. He demonstrated to me one day how fast it is to pop open a Neon... it's ridiculous. I also agree with J -- check out a Honda or a Toyota (SUV, compact car, whatever). A friend of mine had an Accord till just over 200,000 miles with no major problems (just maintenence). And not all "foreign" cars are foreign -- for instance, the Honda Element was designed in California and is assembled in Ohio with 60% american made parts. There's "American" car companies who can't even boast that (everything's done in Mexico!) Good luck whatever you go with!! :)

Jenna - 2005-08-11 13:07:56
Mazda3...95% Japenese...100% kick ass!

"fucking queer assed retarded shit sucker homo" ...comic GOLD, Andy :) buy a fucking ford or chevy, damnit. Fuck Toyota, Honda, Mazda or Kia. Neon's are gay, so there.

Kitty - 2005-08-11 15:24:36
Ford & Chevy fucking suck & break down so easily. Foriegn made is better when it comes to a quality vechicle.

LOL @ FORD. Fords are a joke.

Cara - 2005-08-11 22:34:35
I have to chime in about Neons. I have an '03 and I got into a bad accident wiht a volvo, and we both survived. I've beaten on it, and it's lived. The pre-02 neons are awful, but those built after that definitely don't suck...

Windblown Hair - 2005-08-12 22:48:50
I grew up in the backseats of a) a Camaro, b) two different Monte Carlos, c) an Iroc-Z and several other squished up backseat cars and lemme tell ya, not once did we ever complain of there not being enough room. Of course my sis and I couldn't see a goshdarned thing out the window, but we didn't care! So compact cars don't need to be written off just because of lack of space. I just bought an Acura RSX last month and I'm just blown away with the thing. It's a stiff ride, sure, but it handles quite well. I probably wouldn't recommend it for family purposes but then again, are Camaros built for kids? I agree with those who lean towards Japanese models, if only because of regionalisms. Up here in Canada anything American rusts at the sight of snow/salt. My '94 Grand Am, which I sold last month, had 200,000 kms on it and was still in good condition, minus the rust spots. So really, it doesn't matter all that much what you buy, I suppose, I just wouldn't buy the cheapest version of a model. Get the bells and whistles and the extended warranty (if you can on an used vehicle). Good luck on the Hyundai, though ;-)
