wtg! you managed to buy the brand of car that is one step above a Dodge Neon on the crappy scale. next thing ya know you'll be saying you bought a mazda, which is third from the bottom on the scale, btw. even tho you always said you have zero car knowledge, i always just figured you had SOME... ya know DEEP DOWN... but right now i feel like i just found out there was no santa.

Actually, Hyundai's have been kicking butt lately... have you driven the 2006 Sonata? I want one, badly... and the previous Sonata's actually are great, too... the old days of Hyundai being crap are long gone...

Jenn - 2005-08-12 09:05:38
Good call. I have a Dodge Neon. While it's lasted 7+ years so far, the paint is peeling off!!!!! The radio has gone twice (radio, not CD player!) and the a/c is broke!
-------------------------------
Andy - 2005-08-12 09:07:08
Before I had my Neon, I too owned a Hyudai. (Yea, I've owned every peice of crap vechile made). Overall the Hyudia's are better than the Dodges.

Anyhow, people are still going to call you fag ass, but at least not a "Stupid" fag ass.

fag ass.

For the record, I didn't get a Hyundai either.
-------------------------------
Andy - 2005-08-12 09:12:49
Well?

Please tell me you got a toyota.
-------------------------------
Carrie - 2005-08-12 09:19:45
My husband works at a Ford dealership. He says you can get a focus for dirt cheap right now, my MIL who lives on her own working at a major chain store for nothing can afford one :)

MissPinkKate - 2005-08-12 09:22:23
I had a Dodge Neon- it was a piece of crap, it gave me nothing but trouble- for one whole summer, it constantly broke down and/or had no AC. You should be glad you don't own one- I would never recommend it.

Way to cave in! Peer pressure = cool!

Hyundai's used to be crap. Now they kick some serious ass. I just bought a 2006 Sonata and its gorgeous. Check out some of the reviews on edmunds.com and cars.com - you will be surprised. JD Power gave the Sonata "Most Appealing Midsize Car" two years in a row, beating out Accord and Camry. The Accent hasn't done as well, but really, for the money, you probably did just fine. The warranty is 10 years/100,000 miles, which is also quite nice. Anyway, I'm done. Not bad, UB. ;-)
-------------------------------
Squeakzilla - 2005-08-12 09:58:21
Per annony, Hyundai would be the penultimate choice. Not that I care, I just like seeking out opportunities to use the word "penultimate". Nice move UB, don't tell anybody what you actually bought 'cause they'll only second guess you anyway!

Dea - 2005-08-12 10:22:34
hey whomever said mazdas are bad, I have one and it's lovely and I drive the shiznit out of it weekly and it still loves me. UB Mazdas are great, well so are Toyotas, heck anything imported is great. Although I would loves me a new Dodge charger.... ohhh the hemi....
-------------------------------
Not the best driver - 2005-08-12 10:29:13
Yeah, get a mazda! we rolled one down a hill and over the hood of a ford explorer, and all it needed was a new muffler! still ran for years after that!
-------------------------------
Jenna - 2005-08-12 10:33:02
Yes, Mazdas are so not shitty! Whoever says they are has obviously never driven one! Before I bought my Mazda3 I had a Protege & NOTHING went wrong with it the whole time I had it. But it was time for a trade in because of the high miles. The 2005s are wonderful & I love mine.

Thanks for the entry, ub. Made me smile. :-)

Genghis Jon - 2005-08-12 11:37:24
Hey, have you checked out the Yugos? They're really inexpensive cars on the same level with the Neon.
-------------------------------
Daniel - 2005-08-12 11:44:24
Blah blah blah, I say. Wah, I'm a mechanic, wah. The main problem with all Dodge products is that they are equipped with 30,000 mile transmissions. About 1 every 3 years, pieces of crap.
-------------------------------
Lisa - 2005-08-12 13:07:06
You'd do better to MAKE your own car than buy a Dodge or a Hyundai. Not to be a snob or anything.
-------------------------------
Ang - 2005-08-12 13:14:38
Speaking as Insurance Girl, I will tell you the Neons suck ass for safety discounts, but Hyundais, Ford Focuses, and Mitsubishis are affordable and likely to be owned by someone under the age of 25. That's the age group that drives up the price of insurance, so you want to avoid a vehicle that's popular with 23 year old males. Don't buy a Mustang either, your insurance company will rape you with no kiss first! Just my two cents.
-------------------------------
Jenbo - 2005-08-12 14:39:15
A word of advice, steer clear of imports since when they break down (and they will) you'll need to either get the parts from the dealership which is not cheap or a junkyard which is kinda dodgy (pun not intended). That's just in my experience in Hickland, Canada where it's damn near impossible to find an oilpan and gasket for my nissan sentra.
-------------------------------
The Boy - 2005-08-12 14:53:49
UB with the double post... nice. Jenbo must not have parts stores like here in the States... it's parts a plenty down south!! eh..
-------------------------------
Andy - 2005-08-12 15:08:49
Jenbo, that's very odd. like many cars today, the sentra I belive is made in Mexico. You should be able to find parts for it as easly as any other car. It's and old wives tale here in the states to avoid foreighn cars because of parts or service. That's simply isn't true today. Perhaps in the 70's and early 80's.

I agree with Ang about the "sports cars" owned by young kids, in addition to higher insurance rates on those models, the used ones are typically beat to shit, because they've been mostly driven by young kids who think thier car is indeed a high performance race car and drive them hard. (ie: beat on).

tali - 2005-08-12 15:15:52
According to my brother, who has been a mechanic for 10 years, Hyundais used to be crap, but they are actually doing very well now. He actually suggested to buy one.

Ian - 2005-08-12 15:19:40
My Mum's got a Hyundai Accent - right hand drive of course - and it's one of the nicest cars I've ever had the pleasure of being in. My Dad's Proton however...well, it's getting very old now.

jessica - 2005-08-12 15:25:36
I have a PLYMOUTH neon that will rock your face off...so i don't know if all those haters were hating on dodge or what. I have over 100k miles and have NEVER had a mechanical failure (great, I'm sure my transmission will fall out tonight - thanks bob! :D)
-------------------------------
cosmic - 2005-08-12 16:43:29
I read where you said you didn't buy the Hyundai either. Did ya get an Echo??
-------------------------------
Sarah - 2005-08-12 17:03:16
I'm not sure why there's all this Hyundai hate. My mom drove a Hyundai Excel back in '88, and that thing was trouble-free up through 1995, when the 'rents decided they wanted to buy a new ride. Yeah, it's not pretty and cool, but it's not *bad*.
-------------------------------
Jennifer - 2005-08-12 17:47:53
I owned a used '98 Hyundai Accent (4-door)and LOVED the crap out of it. It NEVER broke down on me and had plenty of room in the backseat for a toddler and his carseat, diaper bag, etc., etc. We put ungodly miles on it while we owned it, since work and home were about 75 miles apart. We sold it to Carmax a year ago and it was still running perfectly. We also owned a Dodge Neon ('97) and it was also a trouble-free vehicle. In fact, we traded it in five years ago to purchase a '99 Dodge Stratus. I lovelovelove my Stratus and will purchase another one when it's time to buy a new car again. This one was a year old when we bought it and, again, we've had no problems with it. It currently has 120,000 miles on it and we drive about 80 miles per day for work and school. I don't know why others have had such bad luck with these cars, but my experiences have been extremely positive.

Penny - 2005-08-12 18:46:33
i had a friend that bought a second hand hyundai. it ended up costing her over double what she had paid for it because it sucked so hard. in the end it was stolen and she got the money back from insurance. so it all worked out pretty well. good luck!!

MustangSally - 2005-08-12 19:40:47
Hmmm....must be the Insurance Company because I have a 5 speed GT 1998 and the insurance is not high at all. But then again I'm over 35..........
-------------------------------
darius - 2005-08-12 22:07:21
I love how people who have had one or two of a particular car make and model think that because their car didn't fall apart, nobody's will. People, this is why you look at Consumer Reports, Edmund's, etc., and look at the RELIABILITY REPORTS for the three year and older cars. There might be someone out there with a 80-year old Edsel that's still running, that doesn't mean the whole line wasn't shit.

stella - 2005-08-13 00:35:37
Can't go wrong with a Mustang. My insurance is reasonable for a 2003 manual GT. The boyfriend has a 2002 manual GT with a major accident and several violations tacked on too, and even his insurace isn't too bad, considering the circumstances.

fifi - 2005-08-13 05:03:50
I don't drive, and I know less about cars than Britney knows of music, I just wondered how old your teenage fanbase is nowadays, UB?

J - 2005-08-13 08:28:00
All this car talk is good to read - I'm moving to the US in two months and I'll have to fork out the dough to purchase me one. Cheers!

Kara - 2005-08-14 11:27:03
I had a Ford Focus. I also had 17 recalls in 3 years. Boo.

Jamie - 2005-08-14 17:08:03
I just sold a neon. I don't know shit all about cars, but... they're not that bad?
-------------------------------
Lish - 2005-08-14 19:03:48
Good choice on the Neon. They're overpriced go-karts... which can be fun. Hyundais are actually fairly good - they really upped their quality and started offering that great warranty (100k mile powertrain) to back it up. And they're cute. So, if that's the way you went - definitely a good call!
-------------------------------
Tenshi - 2005-08-14 20:55:41
Hey J, good luck with that left-handed steering. :P ;) And if the horn is broken... watch for the finger.

That's the funniest conversation that has been recounted to me in years.

I drive a Dodge Neon too and let me assure you - the Hyundai was a good choice.
