I wondered too what Milkshake was, here is what I found from an interview with Kelis: CaitGregs: what does "milkshake" mean in your song "Milkshake?" I love the song but I don't know what it means. People say all different things but I wanna know the real answer. Kelis: "Milkshake" is just that thing that makes a woman stand out from everyone else. It's a thing that makes you sensual and warm and maternal. So, could any kid who wanted to be involved be involved? Man! For our talent shows, we had to audition for judges BEFORE the actual day of the talent show. Then we all had to attend practices up to the day of show and then we all performed. The winner usually received a ribbon or some other such dorky thing. I like your show better! Less work for lots more prize.

My 15 year old daughter is a (competition) varsity cheerleader, and Milkshake is one of the favorite songs used in routines. 20 girls onstange bumping, grinding and tumbling in 5 inch skirts to suggestive songs... Not surprising to see how many men there are at these competitions videotaping. All fathers though, right? Ugh.

Okay, Outkast is a fun hip hop group who have gained recent popularity due to their song "Hey Ya." The Milkshake song is basically about giving blowjobs, "I can teach you, but I'd have to charge." Of course the artist won't come right out and say that, she doesn't want her song pulled off the raido. But just listen to the damn lyrics, and it's all right there.

I think we agree that 'Milkshake' regardless of whether it's tits or BJs or asses that it's about gettin' hot and bothered and it's inappropriate for junior high. I don't even think it's right for high school, but as I get older and think about my 2 year old daughter someday being that age I get a little more uptight about it. As a middle school/junior high orchestra teacher, Bob, I feel for you here. I have a healthy number of students who have no ability to hear what the hell they're playing; whether or not they're on pitch or not, and have a seriously difficult time figuring it out even when I'm playing along with them right in front of them or writing in every single note and fingering for them. Practice at home? P-P-Pshaw.

My friend and I had a big discussion about what "milkshake" stood for once, and he found this on a messageboard: "Ok so I was listening to the radio on the way to work this morning in the car and Kelis was being interviewed on this morning show (she has a performance at a club here tonight) and they asked her about the meaning of Milkshake. She started off by saying something like it can really mean anything you want. Something that you are better at than anyone else, or something you thats special to you, or something that makes people want you more. But then she said when she wrote it, it meant "booty." The guys interviewing her than told her it was "aight to say ASS on the air." Hahaha...She said she was sitting around with some people in a studio one day talkin' about someone shaking their booty like a Milkshake or somethin like that...thats where she got the idea for Milkshake. She also said that she thought people would get the idea that it meant that because of all the focus on her and the other girls shaking their booties in the video, plus she pointed out the part in the video where she pulls a loaf of bread out of an oven thats shaped like an ass." As for the talentless kids... I wish people wouldn't encourage them. Yeah, the bad singers who show up on American Idol are funny, but they shouldn't even be there, and wouldn't be if their friends and family would tell them the truth about their "talent."
