U.B. Would you consider DJing a job in South GA, or is that too far for you?

I used to suffer from insomnia a lot. I even quit drinking coffee for a while. The re are only two things that I've found to be helpful. The first is valerian root. This stuff is good. I've never tried melatonin, so I can't say it is better or wrose, but you might want to give it a shot. The other thing, which works pretty regularly, is don't try to sleep if you aren't tired. Distract yourself for a while with a book or something. Sure, you wont get a full eight hours if you stay up an extra two hours reading, but if you don't stress yourself out about sleeping it will come much sooner than otherwise. I almost never have trouble falling asleep anymore. Hope this helps! BTW, I love your journal. Keep it up. ttfn Crate

If you try the valerian root, make sure that you get it in extract or tincture liquid form. It's more potent that way and will knock you right out. Basicly, it's nature's valium.

Seriously, get some Ambien from your doctor. Trust me on this one. It will knock you out in about 15 minutes and you feel great in the morning.

Valerian root doesn't work for everybody. It depends on your temperment and metabolism. You could be one of those people that takes it and ends up in a semi-hallucinogenic sort of delirium. Not that there's anything wrong with that, either. Hope you are having fun at the wedding. Your diary is entertaining.

Ambien rocks for sleep. I'm a manic bipolar and short of somebody shooting me with a freakin' tranquilizer gun, I would never sleep. You might ask about that.

Uncle bob. You are right about that fire birck pizza, its the best. But you should give this Pizza Stone a try, it makes the absolute perfect pizza, way better than direct rack cooking. Be careful with other cheaper models though, as they can crack while cooking, but not this one. http://www.pamperedchef.com/our_products/catalog/product.jsp?productId=163&categoryCode=FH

"Whats my motivation?" - that single line made me howl. As for the sleeping thing, ever thought about making the wife drive and you crashing out?

Another toot for Ambian. I take 5mg and hubby takes 10. If I am seriousley in need of sleep, I will take one of his instead of mine. Out like a light in 15 minutes, never fail. They are the safes (supposedly) prescription on the market. And you don't wake up with that drugged feeling either.

Two shots of Blind Date?! As a confirmed Insomniac, two shots of Absolut works incredibly well for me...

ambien is great, but one side note: melatonin is a long-term supplement, not a sleep aid. It is supposed to readjust your sleep schedule when taken at the same time every day for a period of time, but it won't really put you to sleep if you just take one. Also, for an in-between solution, over-the-counter Dramamine (motion sickness medication) tends to knock almost everybody out for a solid six hours if you take two. Just be careful to take it early enough that eight hours will pass before you have to drive or otherwise operate heavy machinery.

Screw popping all those pills. You need an exercise routine. Try walking briskly for 30 minutes, and then doing some pushups, crunches, etc. Pills are for fags.

jenny - 2004-03-19 13:38:15
What Spamneggs said. You take a nice long walk around 4:30 or 5:00 in the afternoon, or do some serious yardwork, there's no way your body will let you stay up until three in the morning.

Dude, spamneggs. Increasing exercise doesn't work for everyone. That's why it's called insomnia, and not "I sleep too much and am so damned lazy that I can't go to bed at night anymore." Exercise is a good option, but it doesn't necessarily work. And that last sentence? Seriously not cool.

mary ann - 2004-03-19 13:51:09
Stop looking at the clock! The whole key to going to bed too late is not to know how much sleep you didn't get. You feel better that way.

You pill-popping insomniacs!

Sleep? HA! What a luxury. This is a pastime I never seem to partake in. I hear it's great though. I don't know how Ambien works for anyone... I can take 450 mg of Trazodone and still not be effected (the doctor then gave me Thorazine for schizophrenics... nothing). My boyfriend takes 25 mg of Traz, and is knocked out for two days. Good luck on that whole sleeping thing, UB.

I take 3mgs of melatonin every night and have been getting my best sleep ever. I know with your schedule it's hard, I work 7p-3a so I take it when I get home and it puts me out pretty quick. I bet you not being able to fall asleep is a result of your circadian rhythm getting out of wack with your new job! I hope you have fun with your family. :-)

Blah, blah, blah, The reason you can't sleep is just simply excitement. Don't alter yourself chemically, just rake the leaves (or whatever the season requires) and deal with it. One day you'll feel a little tired and the next day you'll feel a little bit better. That's life!

wordwhore - 2004-03-20 03:20:49
i have exactly the same problem before road trips. i'm sure, at first, it was just roadtrip excitement/jitters. once i began to believe this about myself (ie after it had happened 2 times out of 3), however, it became guaranteed to happen. i could have been awake for 48 prior to pre-roadtrip sleep time & still...nothing. so it's partially excitement, partially a self-mind-fuck. the best thing i have found to do is use a little self-mind-fuck-antidote. i basically tell myself hours ahead of time that it doesn't matter if i can't sleep because i know i've driven on 4 hours sleep before. then, for about 6 hours before bedtime, i try to be as sedentary as possible. i lie on the couch during tv time, usually watching something i have no interest in whatsoever. i might sit at the computer playing several mind-numbing games of solitaire or take a really hot bath right before bedtime. the really hot bath almost always works, take it from a die-hard insomniac, as long as it is your last activity before bed. and try to think about anything but your trip.

I'm glad I was reading today - I've learned about a whole bunch of things I can try for sleeping (rather than 12 beers).
