Brother Ray was the man. Reagan is already buried in my backyard. What? Shit, RONALD Reagan? Nevermind then.

Trinity Sixty-Three - 2004-06-10 15:54:27
Nope he's in there already. Lead lined coffin, tons of embalming. He's there, juicy and all.

Funny how your whole perspective changes when you have kids, huh? Why ship an empty coffin?

Brother Ray was the coolest. I totally envy your time with him. "Greenback, greenback dollar bill/Just a little piece of paper/Coated with chlorophyll."

Okay, so I spent 15 seconds watching Dick Cheney's eulogy to Ronald Reagan and it sparked a question in my brain that I have worked every way I can think of and cannot answer: does the inauguration of George W. Bush to the office of President of the United States mean that Ronald Reagan is no longer the dumbest man to hold that title?

Cori - 2004-06-10 16:37:04
Dude, I hope Reagan's NOT in the coffin. It's hot as hell in DC right now. I don't understand the point of lying in state with a closed casket anyway. If he were in a glass coffin like Lenin, that would be one thing. But he's not. And people are all upset that a 93 year old man they didn't know died of natural causes. What the hell? (Sorry, had to rant. I'm in DC, and this whole thing is really a pain in the ass. At least I get the day off tomorrow.)

Having had a 90+ year old close relative in my family also suffer from alzheimer's for the last 15 or so years of their life, I can assure you, his family was releaved. The man we all knew as ronald reagan died long ago, his body just kept on going with out him. The constant coverage of the funeral is welcome, IMHO, gets that stupid abu graib news of the TV, those damn terrorists deserved to be stripped naked and blungened with sharp objects. What happened to America's John Wayne mentality? When did this nation get an Oprah mentality?
-------------------------------
public defender - 2004-06-10 17:06:26
"First Ronnie. Now Ray. Who's Next?" Maybe Gunnar Hansen (aka Leatherface)? Makes for the perfect trifecta. Ronald. Ray. Gunn. I'll see myself out.

Disgusting.

"What happened to America's John Wayne mentality?" Rock on, HotCarl! and Ray Charles was The Man.

Morgan - 2004-06-10 18:04:57
That's terrible thought, uncle bob. This man died and people are going to pay their respects for making their lives better. Even though the man they knew died years ago, there could have been a cure. The people that loved him were waiting for something. They were waiting to get back the man they loved. You guys are all terrible.

Jeff K - 2004-06-10 18:14:15
It's so weird. I was watching an old rerun (70s era I believe) of SNL last night and Ray Charles was the musical guest and it was the best performance I think I've ever seen him do. He was so into it his ass was barely hanging onto the piano bench! As for Reagan I'm not gonna even comment.

elayne - 2004-06-10 19:19:14
Jeff, something similar happened to me - someone picked Ray Charles' name out of thin air and brought it into a conversation about two hours before I learned of his death. Odd timing! Also, a line to "public defender" - I quoted you on my site, hope you don't mind... (c:

I was thinking of this death thing as more of a "Names that start with R" theme....would Bob be short for Robert? I am very touched at the services and what can only be described as Nancy's petting of the coffin. And to the comment about Reagan no longer being the dumbest man to hold the office of President...Clinton and Nixon might have been geniuses, but they still embarrassed this country by their actions. And I think that's proven by the fact that Nixon was not honored with a state funeral when he died, and I'm willing to mortgage my house on the fact that Clinton won't be, either.
-------------------------------
Pischina - 2004-06-10 21:18:53
And George W. hasn't embarrassed this country FAR more than Clinton did by having an adulterous affair? Whatever.
-------------------------------
public defender - 2004-06-10 22:12:14
elayne...no problem. And Gunnar Hansen played Leatherface in the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre."
-------------------------------
Robert - 2004-06-11 03:02:55
KELLY ... get your facts straight. Nixon did not CHOOSE to have a state funeral. He felt he was never comfortable in Washington, and elected a private ceremony at his library. Research before you type.

elhefty - 2004-06-11 05:39:07
Just imagine you're Ray Charles and you're having an extended snooze....You wake up in a coffin and you can't see for shit. So you use your best sense (feel).... Hmm...I'm in my suit, so it must be a weekend...I'm in a smalllll changing room so it must be Saturday in a shitty town. My hair and makeup is done so I must be getting paid. I can't be getting paid much....but at least I outlived that Reagan fucker.... Where's the fucking doorknob...

elhefty - 2004-06-11 05:50:25
No offence meant to Mr Charles in my above post. He danced like he meant it and he brought a lot of joy to millions around the world. I'm going to shake my "tailfeather" in his honour this weekend. Mr Reagan was (imho) just another overpaid actor being fed his lines by smarter people than himself. Brad Pitt for POTUS...NOT

I loved Ray Charles. When I bought my first CD player, I went next door and bought a Ray Charles CD to play on it. I was fortunate to see him in concert each of the last 3 years, and he lived for the applause. Thank God he was able to keep playing so close to the end. I think it was the performing kept him alive as long as he was. Bless the Genius of Soul, heaven is playing R&B today.

My mom did some TV thing with Ray Charles back about a hundred years ago before I was born. I grew up think he was some kind of GOD the way she went on about him. Heh.

Wow, there's a lot of cattiness in comments today. You just bring out the worst in people, UB.;) Personally, I don't think Reagan is in the coffin. Even with the advances we've made with embalming people, it's still freaking hot out and after a few days, the body starts to break down.
-------------------------------
Dawn - 2004-06-11 11:12:15
Wait, I'm still stuck on yesterday's entry! Do roses smell like poo-poo or boo-boo? And if it's boo-boo --- what the hell is a boo-boo and what does it smell like? I'm so uncool.

Craig - 2004-06-11 11:16:04
I thought the same thing, I wondered if his body is actually in there. Next the conspiracy theorists will say he's still alive.

La Penseuse - 2004-06-11 11:43:53
thank you for being the only person on this whole friggin site to say something about Ray Charles... when I heard, I cried... hardcore... kudos to you, Uncle Bob... you saved the day again... you should get a medal or a cape or something for it. L'amour toujours ~LP

Morgan did you get offended because UB said that his family (President Reagan)was probably relieved by his death? If so, that is probably an accurate statement and not mean. Most (not all) families who have a loved one suffering in the final years of thier lives due to cancer or those who have lost the person they once knew due to Alzheimers(sp) are relieved. Don't confuse relieved with joyful or happy. They are still grieving inside over the death, but as UB stated it is a relief. My own Auntie who had to care for my ailing Uncle w/ serious cancer for over 6 years had the same sort of reaction. She had stayed up w/ him night after night for years, and man was he suffering. She was still devastated when he died, but there was relief there. Plus my family believes that life is renewed after death in Paradise and one day we'll be together again, so our grief is easier to bare. Not critizing, just trying to maybe clear up the statement. Good weekend to all and go out and "Shake a tailfeather" for Ray.....

Au Contrare' (or however you spell it) La Penseuse. My whole entry the day after Ray Charles died was about him. So there.
