I feel ya. I had a car accident this week myself. Insurance company (read: A-holes) will probably declare my car totalled too since it'd cost less to pay it off than to fix it. Maybe I'll see ya at the Death Trap lot.

You gotta weigh the depreciation against what the previous owner might have done to make the car a constant repair nightmare. Sometimes, the new car is the cheaper alternative, both in overall costs AND in peace of mind...

UB, here's a suggestion. Leave Suzy and Andrew at home. Instead, take your bro-in-law-- the one who fixes cars. He might not be an A-1 lemon-spotter, but he'd be better than nothing. You and the BIL narrow the selections down to three or four cars, maybe at different dealerships. Once you've done the weeding, THEN haul Suze and Andy out to make the final selection. May save you some stress...

The drive to Birmingham (well, Hoover)will be well worth it if you go to Carmax. We've gotten two cars there, and there's absolutely NO haggling. The price you see is the price you get. Plus, you can check it out online before you go and pick a few to test drive. Good luck.

What, there wasn't any German lesbian scat porn last night?!?!?

Used vs. New. typically a quality, low milage used car in great shape is a better value than a new one. The trick is finding that used car that is quality and not beat on. Stay away from the typical used car lots, I'd work with the dealers that have low milage trade ins, or maybe even some fleet cars? Go with a toyota or nissan and you wont go wrong.

Try shopping around for Honda Accords. They run forever, hold their value, and get great gas mileage.

I'll add to the suggestions for Carmax. You can't beat the no-haggling factor. Good luck to you. (May I suggest a Saturn?)

So, I just had to buy a new-to-me car. If y'all have a Hertz dealer in the area I highly recommend. They only sell cars that were their rentals (lots of the other ones will sell trade ins too) and they are insanely picky about which ones they'll sell. They only sell their low milage cars with completely clean repair records and they guarantee everything. I had a good experience so I figured I'd pass that along. Good luck.

Hey Bob STAY far away from carmax!! You will pay way more than you should for a car. I highly recommend you find a car no more than two years old that has been turned in on a lease return (you know the people who cannot commit to a car so they lease one for two years and then trade it in and get a new one) When you find the car you want go to edmunds.com and research the value and pay no more than the half way point between the trade in value and the dealer retail (usually what the private party price is even then maybe minus a few hundred!!!) And I know that you are in desperate need of a car but under no circumstances do you ever let them know that your car was wrecked and that you NEEED this car. If you have to have the wife "hate" the car and make the salesman work to sell it to you!!!! Do not be afraid to walk away from the table!!! Remember there are a gazillion car dealers were you can get a nice car and they are all very hungry at this time of year!!! I wish I was buying a new car!!! I love getting great deals!!!!

Check out the Scions (by Toyota). Pretty low price -- we got a new Xb for $15K which included fancy alloy rims. They are a no haggle dealer and the car is a Toyota, so the quality is great.

I found edmunds to be a good resource. I drive a Toyota Rav 4 and for the money it has been the best car I have ever owned. (13+ cars).

you could also get a motor cycle. Yea. Fuck the wife and kid. Get a hog!

Or a VW van. Paint it funky colors and travel the country solving mysteries.

I also hate car salesmen. Researched cars at Carmax online, went there (west coast location), test drove 2 cars, bought one. I was in and out in 3 hours, and love the car. Good price, no hassle, no problems in 21K miles plus since.

I just bought a hyundai tucson and I love it. The safety features (lots of airbags) and the warranty 100,000 or 10 years sold me on it. Plus I put down $12,000 and now my payments are $150 for the next 7 years. Of course I could tell you about the Russian salesman at the honda dealership that insisted I learn to drive stick... Good luck!

Subaru Forester. All-wheel-drive for those Alabama snowstorms, and they get pretty good (mid 20's) gas mileage. Seriously, the AWD is great for driving in the rain anytime. I love mine!

First of all, pay the few bucks to join carfax.com. You put in a VIN number and it gives you the history of the vehicle, any recalls and any accidents. Join it and check out any used vehicle before you buy it. You pay one low fee and it's good for unlimited searces for 30 days.

Stay home and shop online. I just bought a used 2005 Pontiac Vibe that way and it was EASY! All I had to was go to the dealership, sign the papers and drive it home. p.s. the Vibe has a Toyota engine in it so it will run FOREVER.
