Hey Bob, old friend. Watch this video. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/02/23/earlyshow/main1339324.shtml?CMP=ILC-SearchStories

I didn't SNOPES it but I did receive this EXACT same email 6 months to a year ago - which doesn't make it untrue, just that it's been around.

Amy - 2006-02-28 08:03:45
I did check it at Snopes (what can I say; I'm cynical by nature), and it is actually a true story. It's from a "Chicken Soup"-style book by some Rabbi.

Not to mention it's old... from 2000. The linkie in my name is for the article in question, http://www.snopes.com/glurge/chush.htm

MARSHA, MARSHA, MARSHA!!!!

I've heard this one a zillion times, too. Oh well.

Squeakzilla - 2006-02-28 10:28:25
The way I heard it, Shay was asked to play 3rd base. Don't forget to tip your server!

Diner Girl - 2006-02-28 10:41:52
I mean, Jesus Christ, the kid's name is Shay. Could this be more fake? Shay. NIce white trash Wal-Mart name for a kid. Shay. Ugh.

Meg - 2006-02-28 11:07:35
Diner Girl, check out the Snopes article if you care to. The name is Shaya, and it's Jewish. Brooklyn Jew is the opposite of Wal-Mart white trash. Not that I'd name my kid Shaya, but it's better than Diamonique.

Actually, the real point of the exercise is to deconstruct everyone's reactions. For example, derision like Dalek's, Andy's and Diner's Girls are representative of fear; Jan Brady's total changing of the subject shows self-centeredness, Squeakzilla that she's able to deal, etc. And of course my own post shows that I'm smarter than all you turkeys , HA! Joke. I'm not smarter, just faster.

Being the cynic that I am I totally expected there to be a punchline. Thank you for that though, that was nice.

well, I for one thought it was sweet.

I am the parent of a special needs child. Some of the comments here make me want to vomit. Whether the story is true or not, it gives me a little hope that one day my daughter may be shown the same kindness as the boy in this story.

That news story with the kid getting to play in the last few minutes of the game was awesome. Getting to play is great, but proving yourself to be a star player just kicked ass. I loved how the people in the bleachers started cheering when he went up to play, even before he scored a single basket. I wish every special needs kid went to a highschool like that.

It costs nothing to be nice, but can make all the difference in the world to the one you are being nice to.

Meany - 2006-02-28 20:41:53
Awwww. And I half-expected you to wind it up with a dick and fart joke.

Nice entry. Thanks for posting it. The responses here proved the father's point didn;t they?

Doesn't matter if it's true or not, it's a tear jerker and makes us hope that there really are people like those boys who were on the teams. I'd read it before, but it still rought tears to my eyes.

Bum. I spend most of my time on diaryland ranting and you go and put something on that makes me think. Now I might have to put aside my planned rant for this afternoon and be nice. I'm not built for nice! Still, it's a good tale and a good moral and I personally agree wholeheartedly with it. Cheers Bob.
